Fearne Cotton, TV and radio presenter, author and Mind ambassador, visited our Spoken Minds workshop at our Recovery Hub on Homerton Row to learn more about how Mind in the City, Hackney and Waltham Forest supports people living with mental health problems in our local area.

Spoken Minds is a group that uses spoken word and performance poetry as a tool to enhance wellbeing and aid mental health recovery. It provides individuals with a sense of confidence, belonging and self-worth and gives people a safe space to be vulnerable and express themselves.

Fearne, who had never done spoken word before, said "it was just amazing, really exhilarating, terrifying, but I guess the main thing I’ve come away with is that really glorious feeling of connection, when you walk into a group and you don’t know anyone and you come away feeling really part of something."

Building upon her own experiences with depression, Fearne wants to break the stigma associated with mental health by encouraging others to share their own experiences.

She said, "Thank you so much to this brilliant local Mind. It was just the bestness of bestness. I loved it."

We would like to especially extend our thanks and appreciation to our wonderful Peer Services Leadership Manager, Wanda Canton, for delivering our Spoken Minds workshops and making the group such a successful and positive tool for wellbeing and recovery.
